President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing logistical challenges at the Male’ Commercial Harbour, following separate meetings with cargo vehicle drivers and customs clearance agents on 15 January.

The discussions, held at the President’s Office, focused on the key obstacles affecting the smooth movement of goods into the capital, which serves as the country’s primary supply hub.

During the meeting with cargo vehicle drivers, participants highlighted several operational difficulties, including the lack of designated parking areas near the harbour, delays in transferring vehicle ownership, and challenges in accessing spare parts from bonded warehouses. They also stressed the importance of formal recognition of their role in maintaining the national supply chain.

In a separate meeting, senior representatives from customs clearance service providers raised concerns about offloading procedures, limited operational hours, and the condition of cargo-handling equipment at the port.

A major point of discussion in both meetings was the government’s push towards digitalisation. In particular, emphasis was placed on the rapid development of a goods clearance application aimed at streamlining procedures and reducing delays. Participants also discussed the government’s policy on decommissioning old vehicles and accelerating the registration of new replacements.

President Muizzu assured both groups that the government is committed to working closely with all relevant authorities to develop practical and long-term solutions. He underscored the importance of a modern, efficient, and well-functioning harbour system in ensuring economic stability and national supply security.

The President said improving operations at the Male’ Commercial Harbour remains a priority for the administration, as it plays a central role in trade, distribution, and overall economic activity.
