President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to building a sustainable, people-centred, and innovative future for the nation’s tourism industry, in a statement issued to mark World Tourism Day.
The President described the Maldives’ rise as a global leader in hospitality and tourism as a testament to the vision and determination of the industry’s pioneers. He noted that this year’s global theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” closely aligns with national priorities, ensuring that tourism remains a driver of both progress and positive change.
Highlighting ongoing diversification efforts, President Muizzu pointed to the expansion of tourism into less-developed atolls and the introduction of new segments, including halal tourism. He also underscored the importance of major infrastructure projects, such as the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), which he said reflects the country’s long-term development goals.
Expressing gratitude to tourism professionals, he praised their dedication as the defining factor that sets the Maldivian tourism experience apart. “The future vision for the sector rests on the hard work, unwavering commitment, and invaluable contributions of those working in the industry,” he stated.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to continue shaping tourism as a sustainable and inclusive sector, while ensuring that innovation drives future growth. He also extended World Tourism Day greetings via his official X account, reiterating his vision of progress built hand in hand with sustainability.
