President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to amend laws in order to reduce certain state-funded benefits provided to former presidents and members of the People’s Majlis. The decision was revealed in a statement shared on his official social media.

Under existing legislation, the state is obliged to extend various benefits to those who have served as heads of state and parliamentarians. However, this arrangement has drawn criticism from the public, who view it as a financial burden on the state.

In his statement, President Muizzu confirmed that the government will be submitting legislative amendments to the People’s Majlis aimed at removing some of these entitlements. He further stated that the government intends to standardize pension benefits across all state retirees.

One key change under consideration is the suspension of pension benefits for retired state employees who are later reappointed to new state positions. According to the President, the necessary amendments to laws and regulations are already being drafted to bring this into effect.

The issue of dual pension payments—particularly when individuals continue to receive retirement pensions while serving in new state roles—has been a recurring public concern. Members of the People’s Majlis have also acknowledged the problem, noting that discrepancies between the Civil Service Act and the Pension Act have resulted in overlapping benefits and increased state expenditure.

The Majlis Public Finance Committee has already initiated efforts to address the matter, with the proposed amendments expected to play a central role in resolving the long-standing concerns over pension and benefit allocations.
