President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Maldives Digital Service as a new government agency under the administrative oversight of the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, following the dissolution of the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT).
The decision was made under Article 116(a) of the Constitution and was communicated through a directive issued by the President’s Office. Under the same directive, the NCIT was formally abolished, and all its functions were transferred to the newly formed agency.
The move aligns with the Cabinet’s deliberations held on 25 September 2025, which focused on advancing the government’s Digital-First Nation vision. The Maldives Digital Service has been designated as the primary executive body responsible for implementing the Maldives 2.0 Roadmap 2025–2028: Journey to Digital Transformation.
According to the directive, the new agency will assume all responsibilities previously carried out by the NCIT, while also taking on a leading role in driving the country’s digital transformation agenda. This includes coordinating digital initiatives, improving public service delivery through technology, and strengthening digital infrastructure.
The number 1137 has been assigned for official correspondence with the Maldives Digital Service, as specified in the Presidential Directive.
The establishment of the new agency marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to modernise public services, enhance digital governance, and accelerate the Maldives’ transition into a digitally empowered nation.
