President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling it an “unacceptable act of intimidation” against unarmed civilians.
“Strongly condemn Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, unarmed civilian vessels carrying vital humanitarian aid to Gaza. Such intimidation is unacceptable and must not be tolerated,” the President said in a social media post.
He stressed that the flotilla’s mission was strictly humanitarian, meant to deliver essential supplies to Palestinians deprived of freedom and basic necessities. Targeting such aid, he said, is “a grave affront to humanity and international law.”
The Global Sumud Flotilla is a multinational effort involving citizens from 44 countries, including the Maldives. It carries over 500 activists, among them parliamentarians, lawyers, and humanitarian workers. Ibrahim Shaz, Secretary General of the Maldives-based International Aid Campaign, is also participating.
Organisers reported that Israeli forces boarded and seized 13 vessels while 30 others remain en route to Gaza. Videos released by activists show armed soldiers boarding ships and detaining passengers, which they described as an “illegal crime.”
Accusing Israel of repeatedly disregarding human dignity, Muizzu said such actions isolate the country further from the international community. He urged decisive global action against what he described as “gross and repeated violations of international law.”
“The Maldives stands in unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people in their just struggle for human right, justice, peace and security,” he affirmed.
