Maldives Post Limited on Tuesday marked its 119th anniversary, a milestone that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu hailed as a testament to the institution’s enduring contributions to the nation’s progress.
In a social media post, President Muizzu praised the postal service for its crucial role in strengthening communication, supporting socio-economic development, and driving national advancement. He expressed pride in the dedicated leaders and staff who have guided the organization for more than a century, extending gratitude and best wishes for their continued service.
The country’s postal history dates back to 9 September 1906, when the first post office was opened. At its inception, the service used Ceylon 25-cent stamps bearing the name of the Maldives before issuing the nation’s first stamp in 1963.
A major expansion came in 1994 with the establishment of agency post offices across all inhabited islands, ensuring faster and wider delivery of services to even the most remote communities. To meet growing demand, the government later restructured the service into a fully state-owned company, now known as Maldives Post Limited.
Over its 119-year history, Maldives Post has remained a vital lifeline for the nation—connecting islands, fostering community ties, and playing an indispensable role in the Maldives’ socio-economic development.
