First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for greater participation of women in all areas of national development, stressing the need to create more opportunities for women to contribute to the country’s progress.
She made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the “Viluntheri Kanbalun” programme.
The First Lady described women as an important part of the country’s social and educational foundation, saying their contribution plays a significant role in the development of families, communities and the nation as a whole.
Speaking about the programme, Sajidha highlighted entrepreneurship as an important skill that should be developed among women. She said providing women with entrepreneurial knowledge and practical skills could bring significant social and economic benefits to the Maldives.
She noted that the Viluntheri Kanbalun programme had provided participating women with practical knowledge, skills and opportunities to develop critical thinking and other abilities that can support their personal and professional development.
Reflecting on the history of women in different societies, Sajidha said Maldivian women have benefited from greater opportunities compared with women in some other parts of the world, where cultural and religious practices have historically limited access to education, employment and participation in society.
She also highlighted the Islamic principle of equality between men and women, saying Islamic history demonstrates the important role women can play in strengthening communities and contributing to society.
The First Lady said women should be encouraged to become confident, capable and responsible members of society and play an active role in building the future of the Maldives.
