Parliament has unanimously approved the appointment of Jameela Ali Khalid as the Maldives’ ambassador to the United Kingdom.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted Jameela’s nomination to Parliament in accordance with the Maldives Foreign Service Act, which requires parliamentary approval for the appointment of ambassadors.
The nomination was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee, which recommended that Parliament approve her appointment.
All 59 lawmakers present at Wednesday’s sitting voted in favour of the appointment.
The ambassadorial post became vacant after former UK ambassador Iruthisham Adam was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Muizzu.
Jameela brings extensive experience in foreign affairs to the position. She previously served as the Maldives’ ambassador to Germany and was also a Vice President of the Civil Service Commission.
Her appointment now clears the way for her to take up the post as the Maldives’ diplomatic representative in the United Kingdom.
