The Maldives government has announced a simplified process for extending tourist visas, as part of efforts to support the tourism sector amid ongoing regional instability.

Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment, said the new system will come into effect from 1 April, making it easier for visitors to prolong their stay in the country.

Speaking at a press conference held by the national ministerial committee addressing the impact of the Middle East conflict, the Minister outlined measures aimed at improving convenience for tourists and sustaining industry growth.

Under the current system, tourists are granted a 30-day visa upon arrival. However, the revised process will allow visitors to apply for extensions through a streamlined online platform with minimal documentation.

“Without the previous long deadlines and extensive document requirements, applicants can now submit just a photo of their visa, pay the fee online, and receive an extension within 48 hours,” Thoriq explained.

The move comes at a time when the tourism sector is facing pressure due to disruptions in travel routes linked to geopolitical tensions. The Minister noted that approximately 30 percent of tourists travel to the Maldives via Middle Eastern airlines, many of which have been affected by the ongoing situation.

In addition to simplifying visa extensions, the government is also working on introducing specialised visa categories for digital nomads and content creators. These initiatives are expected to support local guesthouses and help diversify the country’s tourism offerings.

Officials say the changes are part of broader efforts to maintain the Maldives’ competitiveness as a global travel destination while adapting to evolving market conditions.
