President Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce a special law aimed at implementing the death penalty in the Maldives.
Speaking to the media, the President stated that there are individuals in the country who have completed all judicial stages required for capital punishment, yet their sentences have not been carried out.
He noted that previous administrations had pledged to enforce the death penalty but did not follow through. The President emphasized that, in a fully Islamic country, it is not a matter of choice—even for the highest authority—to refrain from implementing such rulings.
According to the President, the government is currently working to formally incorporate the death penalty into the national legal framework. The Attorney General’s Office is preparing the necessary legislation, which the government intends to submit to Parliament during the current session.
“Once the bill is passed by Parliament, the government will proceed with implementing the death penalty for those who have completed all judicial stages and meet the legal requirements,” he said.
The President stressed that establishing a clear legal framework for capital punishment is essential to ensure justice and maintain social order in the Maldives.
He also stated that once all legal stages within the Islamic framework are fulfilled, the state does not have the authority to delay or withhold implementation.
