An agreement has been signed to establish a yellowfin tuna processing and export facility in Addu City as part of a major infrastructure upgrade for the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
The facility will be developed through a partnership with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC). MIFCO signed three separate agreements with CMEC, the first of which focuses on expanding fish purchasing and storage capacity at the Addu Fisheries Complex. This project specifically includes the development of a specialized frozen yellowfin tuna processing and export hub in the southern city.
Additional agreements under this partnership include the establishment of a cold storage and blast freezing facility in Hirilandhoo, as well as the upgrading of fish purchasing and cold storage infrastructure in Thinadhoo.
MIFCO stated that these initiatives are designed to significantly enhance the company’s cold storage, processing, and export capabilities across the country. The company also highlighted that these projects will support the sustainable development of the fisheries sector and contribute to increasing the export of high-quality, value-added fish products to international markets.
