The Maldives and Australia have officially lifted restrictions on direct flight operations, allowing airlines from both countries to operate freely between the two destinations.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen announced that the change comes into effect immediately following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations’ aviation authorities.
The agreement is designed to strengthen the existing bilateral air services framework by removing operational limits, paving the way for increased passenger travel, tourism expansion, and enhanced trade connectivity.
Representing the Maldives, Abdul Haris signed the agreement, while Jim Wolf signed on behalf of Australia’s government.
Officials from the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority noted that the deal reflects growing ties between the two countries and is expected to boost airline activity, support tourism growth, and improve economic links.
The initiative also aligns with the government’s wider strategy to upgrade national transport systems and enhance international connectivity through ongoing aviation and maritime projects.
