The government has announced that the first batch of medicines imported through the newly formed State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation Limited (State Pharma) is expected to reach the Maldives by the end of April.

The fully state-owned company was established to tackle ongoing challenges in the health sector, particularly difficulties in accessing essential medicines and the rising cost of healthcare. Limited availability of drugs has long been a common public concern.

According to the government, State Pharma is designed to create a more structured and sustainable system for importing medicines, with a focus on ensuring consistent access to essential drugs. Previously, medicine imports were handled under the State Trading Organisation (STO), but responsibility for essential medicines has now been transferred to the new entity.

Reforms in the pharmaceutical sector are also linked to broader efforts to address financial pressures within Aasandha, the national health insurance scheme. Authorities have acknowledged that expenditure under Aasandha had been increasing at an unsustainable rate over the years, prompting the need for stronger oversight and systemic improvements.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the new company aims to supply all essential medicines required nationwide, including drugs that are currently unavailable. He expressed hope that these medicines would be accessible by the end of April.

State Pharma has already placed overseas orders for approximately 400 medicines that are difficult to source locally. The company is also exploring bulk procurement partnerships with neighbouring countries to lower costs, recognising the Maldives’ limited bargaining power due to its small population.

In addition, a dedicated call centre is being set up to provide information and improve public access to services. The government says measures are being taken to ensure a steady and reliable supply of medicines across all atolls.
