The Maldives has climbed one place in the latest Henley Passport Index, maintaining its position as the strongest passport in South Asia.
The Henley Passport Index, published annually by Henley & Partners, ranks global passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The ranking is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In the latest index, the Maldives is ranked 52nd out of 101 passports, improving from its 53rd position last year. Maldivian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 92 countries.
Within the South Asian region, the Maldivian passport continues to lead by a significant margin. India holds the second position in the region, ranking 80th globally, with visa-free access to 55 countries. Bhutan ranks third in South Asia, offering access to 50 countries without a visa.
Sri Lanka follows next, with its passport allowing visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel to 39 countries.
At the global level, Singapore retained its position as the world’s strongest passport, offering access to 192 destinations without a prior visa. Japan and South Korea jointly ranked second, while five European countries shared the third position.
The improved ranking reflects the Maldives’ growing international mobility and diplomatic ties, reinforcing its status as the leading passport holder in South Asia.
