President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to launch a project to construct at least 3,000 new housing flats in Malé City before the end of the year, describing it as a key step toward addressing one of the Maldives’ most pressing challenges.
The announcement was made during a gathering of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), attended by senior government officials, parliamentarians, and party supporters. In his remarks, President Muizzu emphasized that tackling the housing shortage remains a top priority for his administration.
“With respect to the housing sector, we are actively delivering on the commitments I have made,” he said. “Accordingly, I will launch a project for a minimum of 3,000 housing units in Malé City very soon, before the end of this year.”
The president assured citizens that land and flats allocated under previous administrations would not be affected, stressing that new housing initiatives would focus on both Malé and the outer islands.
Beyond housing, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s broader priorities, including prudent fiscal management. He pledged to meet both foreign and domestic debt obligations without resorting to debt monetisation, underscoring his government’s commitment to financial stability.
The PNC event also served as a show of political strength, drawing a large turnout that included the Speaker of Parliament, cabinet ministers, and senior party figures. During the gathering, President Muizzu formally welcomed new members into the party, symbolically accepting their membership forms in a gesture of political consolidation.
