Hisaan Hussain has resigned as Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), submitting her resignation to party Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday.
Hisaan was appointed to the position in July 2024 following the resignation of former Vice President Mohamed Shifaz.
In her resignation letter, Hisaan said the MDP Charter does not provide for the Vice President to be directly elected by party members. Instead, the position is filled through a presidential nomination and requires approval from the National Council.
She noted that her appointment and mandate were therefore linked to former MDP President Abdulla Shahid, who nominated her for the position.
Following Shahid’s resignation as party president, Hisaan said she did not believe it would be appropriate to continue serving as Vice President without receiving a new mandate, in line with democratic principles and established practices.
Despite stepping down from the leadership position, Hisaan said she remains committed to the MDP and will continue contributing to the party as an ordinary member.
Her resignation comes shortly after Shahid resigned as MDP President to contest the party’s primary for the 2028 presidential election. He has since officially launched his campaign.
MDP Deputy Chairperson Ahmed Abdulla also resigned from his position on Wednesday to support Shahid’s campaign.
