Maldivians aged 21 and above returning from overseas can now bring limited quantities of tobacco products for personal use without paying import duty, following an amendment to the regulations.
The new rules allow duty-free import of:
- 200 cigarettes
- 20 cigars
- 100g of tobacco products
Limited quantities of cigarette-rolling products for personal use are also covered by the duty exemption.
However, the concession does not apply to people born in 2007 or later. Sheesha, e-cigarettes, e-liquids and flavoured cigarettes are also excluded from the duty-free allowance.
The amendment comes despite the government’s wider efforts to curb smoking and restrict tobacco and vape products in the Maldives.
