Maldives has witnessed a significant surge in private jet traffic, with arrivals more than doubling over a two-week period as ongoing instability in the Middle East disrupts commercial air travel.
According to figures released by Maldives Airports Company Limited, a total of 128 private jets landed in the country between 28 February and 14 March. This marks a 166 percent increase compared to the same period last year, when 70 private jets were recorded.
The data highlights a notable shift in arrival patterns. In the previous year, the Maldives averaged around five private jet arrivals per day, with a peak of nine in a single day. This year, the daily average has surged to over twelve, reaching a high of eighteen arrivals on 3 March alone.
Industry stakeholders, including Maldives Association for Travel Agents and Tour Operators, attribute the spike to ongoing unrest in the Middle East, which serves as a major global aviation hub. The disruption has led to multiple commercial flight cancellations, prompting high-end travellers to opt for private aviation as an alternative means of reaching the destination.
Tourism officials note that while geopolitical tensions have altered travel patterns, overall demand for the Maldives remains strong. The increase in private jet arrivals is seen as a reflection of the country’s continued appeal as a luxury destination and a safe haven for international visitors.
Despite external challenges, the Maldivian tourism sector appears resilient, with the latest figures reinforcing confidence in the destination’s ability to attract premium travellers even during periods of global uncertainty.
