Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has resigned from his post.
Fayyaz, who was elected Chairman on May 23, 2022 after contesting against National Assembly Member Imthiyaz Fahmy, stepped down on Sunday.
In his resignation letter to members of the MDP National Assembly, he said he had taken on the role “with sweet hopes” and had worked to bridge differences among party leaders, despite facing major challenges in managing the party.
He noted that internal unrest has now begun to affect the party’s overall functioning. Fayyaz also acknowledged his interest in contesting the 2028 presidential election, but said others with similar ambitions have already taken leading roles.
Fayyaz stated that he would continue to prioritise the interests of the country and the party. He added that he hopes his resignation will put an end to the perception that he is obstructing the party advisor and party president from carrying out their responsibilities with full authority.
