Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has resigned after days of violent protests triggered by a controversial social media ban and fueled by anger over corruption. At least 19 people were killed and more than 100 injured as security forces clashed with mostly Gen-Z protesters demanding accountability and free expression.
The government’s decision to block 26 major platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp, sparked the unrest. Facing mounting pressure after protesters set fire to politicians’ homes and defied curfews in Kathmandu, Oli announced his resignation in a televised address, saying he stepped down “to restore peace and open the way for national dialogue.”
Political uncertainty now hangs over Nepal as the ruling coalition works to name a successor, while protesters insist their movement will continue until systemic reforms are made.
