Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced plans to collaborate with the tourism industry to generate dollar income, as part of efforts to address challenges in securing foreign currency for operations.
MWSC Managing Director revealed that the company requires around USD 25 million annually to sustain its operations. However, limited access to dollar revenue has created difficulties in procuring imported materials and diesel. He noted that MWSC has operated for more than 30 years without a structured mechanism to generate foreign currency, making the issue increasingly pressing.
To address this, MWSC has outlined two approaches, one of which focuses on entering the tourism sector. Discussions are already underway regarding the company’s participation in the resort project being developed by Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in HDh. Naagoashi.
Highlighting MWSC’s extensive expertise in planning, designing, and implementing water and sewerage systems, the Managing Director emphasized the importance of utilizing these skills in tourism-related projects to establish a reliable stream of dollar income.
MWSC’s management and board have prioritized finding a long-term solution, and the company expects its new initiatives to begin delivering results in the coming months.
