Official figures have revealed that the state has spent a staggering 18.9 million MVR on health insurance for former members of the People’s Majlis over the past decade. The information was disclosed following a Right to Information (RTI) request submitted by citizen Jubran Shareef.

According to the records, the scheme provides each former MP with a monthly allowance of 24,000 MVR to cover health insurance costs. This benefit has been in place since 2014 and continues to be funded from the state budget.

Between 2014 and May 28, 2025, the total amount paid has reached 18.9 million MVR, with the expenditure showing a gradual but noticeable increase over the years. The data indicates that the state’s commitment to former Majlis members has placed a growing financial burden on public funds, particularly in recent years.

Breakdown of annual expenditure on health insurance for former MPs:

  • 2014: 562,500 MVR
  • 2015: 562,500 MVR
  • 2016: 565,000 MVR
  • 2017: 1,056,000 MVR
  • 2018: 1,056,000 MVR
  • 2019: 2,328,000 MVR
  • 2020: 2,328,000 MVR
  • 2021: 2,280,000 MVR
  • 2022: 2,280,000 MVR
  • May 2023 – April 2024: 2,280,000 MVR
  • May 2024 – May 2025: 3,624,000 MVR

The records show that until 2016, expenditure remained relatively stable, hovering around 560,000 MVR annually. However, starting in 2017, the costs began to rise sharply, with annual spending crossing the one million mark. By 2019, the expenditure more than doubled, reaching over 2.3 million MVR, and remained at similar levels until 2022.

The most recent period, from May 2024 to May 2025, has seen the highest annual spending yet, amounting to 3.6 million MVR. This indicates a significant rise in either the number of former members benefiting from the scheme or the duration of coverage provided.

The disclosure has sparked renewed public interest in the perks and privileges extended to former parliamentarians. While proponents argue that health insurance is a necessary entitlement for those who have served the state, critics highlight the heavy financial strain on national resources, especially at a time when the country is grappling with mounting debt and economic challenges.

As debates over public expenditure continue, the figures underline the growing cost of maintaining benefits for former lawmakers, raising questions about the sustainability and fairness of such state-funded privileges.
