Opposition MDP President Abdullah Shahid has accused the current government of looting the country’s treasury, stating that the effects of corruption and mismanagement are visible across the Maldives today.
Speaking at the party’s National Council meeting held last night at the Dhandikoalhi Haruge, Shahid strongly criticized the administration, alleging that it has not only plundered state resources but also stolen the rights and hopes of the Maldivian people. He further claimed that the voices of parliamentarians have been suppressed under the government’s rule.
The meeting also heard remarks from MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Fayyaz warned that while the economy is collapsing and citizens face growing hardships, there is another major threat looming, one that the people remain unaware of due to a lack of transparency.
Meanwhile, former President Solih highlighted the financial struggles facing ordinary families. He noted the sharp rise in commodity prices and unaffordable electricity bills, stressing that even households with two working members are unable to meet basic expenses. Solih said the government must be held accountable for worsening living conditions.
The MDP leadership’s remarks reflect growing opposition criticism of the government’s handling of the economy and its alleged lack of accountability.
